REAL SPORTS DAWGZ

History of the medium we are in, sports talk radio at WFAN!!!

Came across an article that gave a little history to the industry I enthusiastically call myself apart of, SPORTS TALK RADIO. Now today you can’t turn the radio dial without coming across shows like; Sports Wrap w/ Pep & Dre, The Big Show, Mike’d Up: Francesca on the FAN & Mad Dog Radio (formerly Mike & the Mad Dog), Jim Rome Show, Todd Wright Tonight, etc. On stations all across the U.S., Canada, U.K, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, etc. on stations considered terrestrial or satellite you have conversations about sports, players, teams, leagues and the mass amounts of interest/money they generate! But it all started in one place, in the late 1980′s in the city of New York on WFAN over 25 years ago!!!

Yes thanks to Mr. Jeff Smulyan and Emmis Broadcasting, 24 hour sports talk was introduced very unceremoniously to the fan and sports interaction would never ever be the same. Technology caught up so not only could the big names converse about the sports actions of the day but the common fan could now become the voice of their favorite sport or team forever changing the landscape of sports reporting!

So thank you WFAN / 660 AM on July 1, 1987 at 3 PM you, Suzyn Waldman and Jim Lapley began what I enthusiastically call my sports wrap ch’i every weekday for at least an hour!!! (Ruwkus, peep the EPIC meltdown of the immortal Pete “Acid-Breath” Franklin pre Mike & Mad Dog!!!!))
