The Silent Assassin..

You can call Doug McDermott a lot of things; this year’s Jimmer, the coach’s son, baby face killa, quiet storm, and “DMD” but after you watch him play for the #13 ranked Creighton Blue Jays, you’ll have to call him a flat out baller. The kid from Aames, Iowa who played high school hoops with Harrsion Barnes of UNC is accustomed to getting over looked, heck his Dad didn’t even want to offer him a scholarship initially. Dougie used the lack of attention and the opinions of the naysayers as motivation and that drove his work ethic to stay in the gym and his commitment to work on his game. Hard work still and always will pay off in the long run. As chance will have it Greg McDermott, his father, is now his coach for the Blue Jays(21-2) and his son is leading the team in scoring(23.6) and rebounds(8.3). Good career move coach. The most dynamic part of Doug’s game is his ability to be a factor even when the ball isn’t in his hands. I’m sure being a coach’s son has helped in his progression in that department. Move over Cornhuskers, the fellas from Omaha are looking to go dancing deep in the March madness tourney this year.

Remembering the struggle!!!!….Black History…Black Fists..Blacks in Sports!!!!

Fake it Til you Make It..

Today was national signing day for high school football recruits. With each passing year the “SHOW” has gotten bigger and bigger. Parents, friends and family watch proudly on as student-athletes across the country declare where they’ll be playing college football. Perhaps the biggest and most memorable moment in their young lives. Well for Kevin Hart he wasn’t going to to let the fact that Cal never really offered him a scholarship deter him from having his own coming out party live from his high school gym. Didn’t take long for his charade to fall apart and a valuable life lesson was learned for all. What’s done in the dark, will always come to light. This story does have a happy ending, Kevin was able to pick up his grades and is currently enrolled and playing football for Division II Missouri Western State. For real this time!! Congrats Kev keep HOPE alive!!

Dungy to Ryan: "Watch Your Mouth"

Former Super Bowl champion coach and all around stand up guy, Tony Dungy, would like NY Jets Coach Rex Ryan to clean up his act. Apparently, Dungy wasn’t at all pleased with the amount and frequency of Ryan’s foul language when HBO debuted the Jets’ on this season of “Hard Knocks”….Normally I would tend to agree with Tony D but as a former football player; I must say I enjoyed a few f bombs and other varities of sailor talk on the gridiron…the football field is a sanctuary of sorts where men can be men…with it’s own set of rules and code of conduct..I’m sure Dungy wishes more coaches would be like him and refrain from the harsh language without losing the ability to teach and lead professional athletes… but the reality is that the beauty of the NFL is that the coaches come in all shapes and STYLES…The NFL and all major sports for that matter is a results driven league…so whatever language a coach must use or prefer to get the job done…its all F***ing good BABY!!!

The General Speaks Out…

Never the one to bite his tongue, Bobby Knight, at a recent Indiana University basketball speaking engagement spoke on a variety basketball of topics including stories of his former players, historic games he has been a part of and the current state of college hoops. That’s when things started to get good..w/out saying his name directly; Coach Knight said that there’s a coach at Kentucky who has left two previous programs under heavy NCAA sanctions and scrutiny and is still coaching??? The coach in question is none other than Coach John Calipari. The General used Calipari as an example that the college game is lacking integrity and it’s starting with the coaches. When Calipari was informed of the Knight comments; he deflected the criticism and actually credited Knight for helping him prefect previous offensive sets he brought to Memphis and now at Kentucky. Smart move Coach Cal you don’t want to mince words with the General…no win situation!!!!

1st Annual RSD College Football Playoffs…

Courtesy of RSD Xmas has come early for college football fans- Here’s our 8 team single elimination tourney to determine the “true” College Football National Champion. Let the countries ELITE 8 battle it out head to head to see who deserves to be crowned the best of the BEST!!! Year after year fans are left unfulfilled by our traditional bowl games that usually pit the teams that nobody really wants to see but for obvious financial reasons are played anyway. RSD’z playoff route to glory is designed for “us”..the real fans of the game; who care less about dollar signs and more about the action on the field!!!

- Check out the bracket and let RSD know how you think this playoff will shake down. The winners…the losers….We’ll update the bracket with our predictions as the Bowl season rolls on..

MNF Preview…

Is it Monday nite yet? It sure is and the defending NFC conference champs, Arizona Cardinals, head into Candlestick Park and with a win can capture back to back NFC West division titles. Led by the “ancient one” QB Kurt Warner of the Cardinals are coming off an impressive victory over the the Minnesota Vikings. The Cardinals are making the same late season push that vaulted them into the Super Bowl of last year. The defense is stout and play with a violent intensity. Look for FS Adrian Wilson to make plays in the secondary as well as plays close to the line of scrimmage. The home team has stumbled over the last month and half of the season and the chance for any playoffs seem to have but faded away. Nonetheless, Coach Mike has to find a way to get his troops to compete for an entire game and eliminate the mental mistakes that have become all too familiar for this team on both sides of the ball. The 49ers “D” can be described as porous at best…only spot is tackling machine LB Patrick Willis. Too bad you can’t replicate his play and leadership at the other ten positions on the field. Pep’s prediction- 49ers in an upset win by 7!!!!! Yes, I’m a 49er fan and it’s the Holiday season anything can happen. Lets hope so….

And the Winner Is…

It’s time for RSD to award this week’s winner of the “Little Big Dawg” Award where we recognize those athletes that come in smaller packages, 6 feet or less, but still deliver BIG on RESULTS…The winner is London Fletcher; the 12 yr vet from John Carroll University is currently anchoring the Skins’ D as the starting middle linebacker..While J. Campbell and that offense is almost at times unbearable to watch; Mr. Fletcher can be seen on the other side of the ball playing relentlessly, hard on every single down. No surprise there, but what is a surprise is that this model of consistency has never been to a Pro Bowl…not 1??? Wow. Over the last ten years his numbers are almost identical of “Mr. Pro Bowl” himself Ray Lewis but yet the accolades continue to elude him. Talent, passion and tenacity won’t be denied here; so London keep knockin’ heads and taking names…we see you!!!! And congrats on your recent nomination for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for your service and commitment to your community- remember folks, “It’s not the size of the dawg in the fight, but the size of the fight in dawg that matters” ..

Uncle Sam Getting in the Way…

California and the Staples Center are fading to the back of the pack to host the super mega fight of the century between Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr; thanks in part to the 3.5 to 5 milli’ in taxes each fighter would have to pay to the Golden State…Business is business; so as fight fans we’ll have to wait for the decision and just hope these venue issues don’t delay this dream bout!!!

SEC vs Big East Showdown- College Hoops

Madison Square Garden was buzzing last nite as the Kentucky Wildcasts defeated the UCONN Huskies in a thriller that was a tight battle to the very end…it was an early season match up of two national powers and it lived up to the hype..down south grit vs east coast swag!!! Both teams are stock piled with gifted ballers but all eyes were on the point guards last nite. Kentucky’s, do it all freshman, Mr. John “1 and done” Wall is for real and posted a career high 25 pts and hounded the Huskies “O” all nite which resulted in 6 crucial steals. Huskies PG Kemba Walker did his best to lead his team and made some big plays; but ultimately the story of the nite was way too much Wall. PG John Wall scored all but a few of Kentucky’s final points. Coach Cal of Kentucky, at times, is equally as entertaining to watch as his frosh point guard- from his pre/post game interviews and his animated, sideline antics!!!! College hoop fans the action doesn’t stop- tonite we have Syracuse vs Flordia on ESPN. Enjoy the hoops!!!

Make Room Fellas…Danica is Coming!!!!

After years of speculation and rumors; Danica Patrick has decided to take on the NASCAR circuit on a part time basis while still driving the Indy car circuit as well. Danica will drive the #7 Chevy car sponsored by Godaddy.com and she’ll driving underneath JR Motorsports ownership umbrella. Danica is stepping into a pretty neat situation with the availability of good equipment and a hand ons owner in Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Danica has a lot of spunk and racing cred; but just showing up won’t win any checkered flags for this pretty face and big personality. She’s a marketing gem and already has two Godaddy.com commercials ready for the coveted Super Bowl Sunday spots. Patrick has a huge learning curve in NASCAR to tackle and the boys won’t make it any easier for her- but racing fans will enjoy the ride!!!

MNF Preview

Is it Monday nite already? It sure is and tonite we have a MNF match up of the host Green Bay Packers and the visiting Baltimore Ravens. I’d suggest keeping the heater on because the cold freeze of Lambeau might come thru your tv sets tonite. Its early December and the weather/elements definitely will become a factor in these upcoming playoff crucial games. The Packers are riding a hot streak of three consecutive wins and QB A. Rodgers has found a nice rhythm and has that offense buzzing. The Packers defense is very stout against the run and the secondary is led by Mr. Heisman himself; CB Charles Woodson. Woodson currently has 7 int’s and 54 tackles. He’s playing at a high level right now and is certainly headed towards an All Pro Year. The Ravens have been uneven at best this season and need to find a way to put together a string of victories down the stretch of this season or they can kiss any chance of post season play goodbye. The ultimate question remains- can Ray Lewis, the emotional leader and captain, rally the troops and pull out a tough win on the road? Well, I think so. Pep’s prediction- Ravens win by 3.
